Remember when we were kids and anything could be anything when we played? A simple clean white bed sheet over two chairs could transport your bite-sized self to an outdoor tent in a faraway forest ready to fight off bears while snacking on s’mores.

It was so easy to see the possibilities. But as we get older it becomes a little too easy to see the limitations. Too much money, not enough time…or energy! But according to Wall Street Journal contributor Michelle Slatalla, you are never too old to freshen up your space. And if you are worried about cost, often all it takes is a coat of new paint or to re-arrange the furniture.

Perhaps, instead of playing with a bed sheet, you can now have fun with a one-of-a-kind textile…a little tailoring or a tuck and it can be a new piece of wall art.

You’re never too old to spice it up

In her column aptly titled “Why I’ll Redecorate Until I Kick the Bucket” Slatalla muses about the room that looks like a time capsule from an earlier era – whether it’s a kitchen with 1990’s granite counter tops or a den with wall-to-wall shag carpeting – that makes you wonder if its owners are also stuck in time.

Slatalla is right when she says, as we get older we should make decorating changes for aesthetic reasons as well as those that are more practical.  As we age our sense of color, smell and touch changes, so what looked and felt good to us when we were younger may not anymore. Did you know the lenses in our eyes yellow as we age, so colors actually take on a tinge. Yikes. And redecorating is better – and cheaper – than therapy. Doctors say a small decorating change can be good for your self-esteem and your mood.

So, if you think you are too old to change up your space reflect on Doris Fingerhood, a 90-year-old Manhattan-based interior designer who started decorating in the 1940’s. Now Doris spends most of her time updating the homes she originally designed decades ago.

What it all means

My takeaway: it’s never too late to make your space beautiful. Go ahead play a little. For inspiration check out some of our favorite design installations and give us a call at 602-334-1345. We would love to build a blanket fort with you!

For designers and home decor buyers, Atlanta Market is THE place to be in January. So, this week we awoke in the dark to take off in a big jet at the crack of dawn, making the trek across six states and two time zones to land at Americas Mart in Atlanta. One of our favorite destinations! (I love my job.)

We Atlanta Market

At Market the energy is electric and everyone is excited over a week packed full of beautiful discoveries and amazing finds. We saw new product introductions and got to attend some pretty exciting design events.

So Many Treasures

Market is like a treasure trove! There really is something for everyone and our passion is finding the perfect somethings for our customers.

We networked with some of our favorite designers, like Monica Porter at Montes Doggett. Her collection of stunning Peruvian ceramics is one of our favorites…and yours too.

We honestly can’t wait to play with all the dried flowers that will be here for spring.

And we are in love with the gorgeous spring 2019 apparel by Neem Living that is coming soon to Willows.

We know you will love it, too!

Here is GREAT vintage we saw at Market. They all sold immediately. There must be some serious Veuve lovers out there.

We met so many nice people, and animals too. They all want to come home with us. They really loved Susan.

How about these great pots? We love the way these were planted.

Ahh…so many shades of green (and so little time). No pun attended.

This trip to Atlanta really inspired us with great ideas and we found so many amazing treasures we can’t wait to share with you to make your lives even more beautiful. Keep checking back and visit our online store to be the first to see as they come in!

Bev

looking for a unique mother’s day gift? we have you covered. here are some of our favorite ideas at the willows: lavande (purely amazing lavender scented) lotion or linen spray or mosquito spray for the upcoming warm weather; we can put together a basket in the shop of some of her faves…a new white t-shirt, a candle and fresh flowers; perhaps some new bella notte linens for summer; or the number one…a perfectly crisp white cp shades linen button down. let us know what we can do to help you find the perfect gift for that mama in your life. don’t forget mom’s day is coming up on May 8th!

some of my absolute favorite and most elegant dishes we carry in the shop are from our astier de villatte collection. their charm and perfectly imperfect crafted nature can not be beat. handmade in Paris from black terra cotta clay and glazed in milky white, they can go from everyday durable wear to the prettiest and most dashing dinner party. each piece is a unique collectible you will want to hand down to your children or dearest friends. come by and check them out if you are unfamiliar and love white dishes as much as we do! happy tuesday.

we spent last weekend in la dodging rain clouds while going to and fro to find the best for the shop. we love making our way into the flower mart for much inspiration and happened upon some winning pieces for store display…do stay tuned for a new look in the shop! hungry, we headed to bottega louie for some treats and eats…it never disappoints. style and taste are on point indeed. what a whirlwind of a trip, driving out in the storm and headed home after a successful shop trip! looking forward to a great week in design ahead. hope your week is going well!

my daughter recently did a fun day trip out to strawberry for a little goat feeding, a touch of snow and a breath of fresh air out of the city. with many brand new baby goats (one just born the night before), lamas, gorgeous views, lavender goats milk soap and chocolate fudge, it was a pretty good day i’d say. needless to say she did not end up bringing a few home, despite the challenges from her own kids. we are pretty fortunate here in arizona to be surrounded by some amazing farms with so much to offer. here are a few we love!

whipstone farm and its csa program delivery for fresh flowers can’t be beat

the ranch at fossil creek: as we mentioned; this is where you go to feed the baby goats and also hiking tours

schnepf farms has many great seasonal activities…think pumpkins or peaches

and there is always THE Farm at south mountain; a glorious little getaway for weekend brunch or a romantic dinner

so here’s to happy local farm support! hope you are enjoying a bit of gorgeous weather here in our beautiful valley.
